HRA Tax Exemption Guide India - Everything You Need to Know
House Rent Allowance (HRA) provides tax exemption to salaried employees in rented accommodation. Correctly claimed, it saves significant taxes annually.
How HRA Exemption is Calculated
HRA exemption = minimum of :
Actual HRA received from employer
Rent paid minus 10% of basic salary
50% of basic salary (metro) or 40% (non-metro)
Metro Cities : Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai
Example 1: Metro City (Mumbai)
Basic: ₹50,000/month, HRA: ₹20,000/month, Rent: ₹18,000/month
Actual HRA = ₹20,000
Rent - 10% Basic = ₹18,000 - ₹5,000 = ₹13,000
50% Basic = ₹25,000
Exemption : ₹13,000/month | Taxable HRA : ₹7,000/month
Annual tax saving (30% slab): ₹13,000 × 12 × 30% = ₹46,800
Example 2: Non-Metro (Jaipur)
Basic: ₹40,000/month, HRA: ₹16,000/month, Rent: ₹12,000/month
Actual HRA = ₹16,000
Rent - 10% Basic = ₹12,000 - ₹4,000 = ₹8,000
40% Basic = ₹16,000
Exemption : ₹8,000/month
Annual tax saving (30% slab): ₹8,000 × 12 × 30% = ₹28,800
